"HISTORY, A DEAD SUBJECT?"
—Metanoia
I know most of us know or have seen the video circulating online regarding a reality show having a pop quiz on Philippine history. As a Social Science teacher, it's quite disappointing seeing those individuals answer those questions ridiculously, but I don't condemn them due to their innocent ignorance, but if we're going to check most of the questions, it is clearly taught in elementary. I can even remember the names of Philippine Presidents being discussed by my Grade 5 HEKASI teacher, and until now I can definitely memorize those things (not to brag). Sometimes we tend to label history as the most "boring" subject due to memorialization, and sometimes "Araling Panlipunan" is taken for granted, like, for example, the history of "Martial Law" with most of us thinking that Martial Law was good, and the books and the institutions are corrupting the minds of the students and pupils due to videos and conspiracies circulating on Facebook or Tiktok created by individuals who have no degree in history or even social science, and it clearly affects us economically, psychologically, and politically (ripple effect). The ignorance of the common Filipino people is the target of this kind of monstrosity, and these people are gaining from historical distortion (not historical revisionism). In my opinion, the problem didn't come from schools and institutions; the problem circulates within ourselves. We need to break the stigma about social sciences and history. Let's try to open our minds, learn the things of the past, and accept historical facts without disrupting them. Remember, people who forget history tend to repeat it.
